A recent study has found that anxiety and cognition are improved with the presence of the correct levels of magnesium in the body.

The medical research study published in The Journal of Neouroscience found that the presence of magnesium is essential to enable over 300 biochemical enzymatic reactions that are critical to the body to operate.  Added to which, magnesium is also needed by the brain in order to carry out its correct electrical and neurotransmitter functions.

Anxiety and stress are indirectly eased by magnesium supplementation as both brain plasticity and prevention of cognitive decline are helped by the presence of the mineral, and memory storage and retrieval may also be optimised by having the correct levels of magnesium present.

In a study conducted by researchers at the Center for Learning and Memory located in the University of Texas’ School of Medicine, it was found that negative programming that resulted from past stressful experiences could be corrected by creating new brain response patterns. This functioning depended on magnesium to occur. By changing the learned fear response, anxiety and stress were better dealt with by the subjects in the study.

Many nutrition experts suggest that a daily supplementation of 300 mg to 500 mg of magnesium will help to gain the effect of reduced stress and anxiety as well as greater cognition. Low levels of magnesium are connected with low brain energy output which itself is often seen as a sign of Alzheimer’s and other degenerative conditions.
